Staying Connected when Working Remotely

16.03.2021

With more companies now deciding to run their businesses remotely, how can we keep our employees engaged and connected with each other?  This can be a real modern-day challenge even for experienced remote workers and taking regular steps to encourage connection can make a difference to the mental health of every individual.  We asked around and put together these top tips from people whose roles have moved permanently to being home-based:

  1. Have a regular online coffee break slot so that people who would normally chat to their colleagues can get together for a few minutes of catching up with each other.  As little as 15 minutes a day can provide the break and reconnection people need to feel part of the team.  This also is good for virtual lunches.

  1. Consider providing a variety of online fitness sessions for staff who can take part if, and when, they want to.  Yoga is great for relaxation and stretching out tight muscles from sitting at a desk all day, and short but intensive cardio sessions are excellent for burning off some energy.  All levels and types of movement help release serotonin and dopamine which are great for keeping us feeling good, and there are many freelance fitness instructors who offer these services.

  1. Provide one off short sessions, perhaps at lunchtimes, teaching everyone something interesting and engaging that is not work-related.  This can also be done by employees for employees and sharing their interests can provide a bit of light relief in the middle of the day, as well as some social connection.

  1. Holding company/office-wide challenges or fun activities online can be a great way to bring a team together and let off some steam, particularly after a busy and stressful period of work.  Baking challenges, junk-modelling competitions or show and tell sessions can be a real laugh and a way to reconnect and lighten the mood in readiness for the weekend or to set everyone up for a productive week.
