Welcome 2023 and for those of you who have made resolutions the best of luck. We know most don’t go anywhere, the books never get read, the courses that never get finished and the goals, well, who needs goals anyway.
Here are a couple of ways to start the new year, an alternative to resolutions. Make a note about how you would like to feel this time next year e.g. satisfied, proud, content, excited, on target etc. You can work backward from there, looking at what will give rise to those feelings, what will you do or make to feel that way.
Or simply follow your heart. It's a big one and it's bigger than it first sounds so start at the beginning – your values, get clear on them. Look at your current situation what is going well for you? What’s working? It's affirming to see the good first and then move to what needs changing and what would you like to lose, minimise and let go of.
Make time once a week to ground yourself to look inside and to notice, how you think, feel and talk to yourself in that never-ending conversation. It's time by yourself to review and ask, are you able to live your values day to day? Or where are your values showing up?
Weekly check-ins are helpful as it takes the pressure off annual reviews and resolutions, or the annual “oh no I missed my goals again”. Importantly make the decision to be kinder on yourself and it'll be easier to be more forgiving of others. Don’t get it confused with accepting second best, avoiding difficult conversations or just being agreeable, that’s avoidance, compliance or low self-esteem.
By being clear on your values and therefore your boundaries you will be stronger, have a greater sense of your identity and independence. People with high self-esteem know their value and this is a very good place to start any new year journey.
