Meet the team

Illuminate has over thirteen years of experience using coaching, training and facilitation techniques to overcome and manage mental ill health. Their expertise is specifically in helping people to make positive and sustainable changes in their lives. Their approach is to create a level playing field where coaching is available to people regardless of their personal circumstances. They are passionate about challenging the stigma of talking about and addressing mental health.

 

The team are warm, welcoming, deliberately informal and non-judgmental. This is balanced with a high degree of expertise and professionalism.

Sam Greenley and Maria Varallo

Sam Greenley

Sam Greenley - Co-founder

Sam has 20 years of experience working in the public and private sectors in business management, and 12 years in mental health coaching.

She is a Maths graduate with a Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management (2003), and holds Diplomas in Practitioner Coaching (2007) and NLP (2008).

Maria Varallo

Maria Varallo - Co-founder

Maria has over 20 years of experience in training, mentoring, coaching and running her own business. She is qualified with post-graduate degrees in Social Work (1998) specialising in mental health and Business Coaching (2007). Her specialism is working with the business community to ensure excellent service and delivery of Illuminate's coaching, training, workshops and talks.

Anna Gilchrist

Anna Gilchrist - Community Engagement Coach

Anna's background is managing the award-winning Dawn Project at Cambridge Women's Resource Centre. She is a graduate of our first Confidence for Change course in 2008, and then became a trustee for Illuminate. As Community Engagement Coach she works with individuals offering signposting to the right service, support through meet-ups online, and if appropriate and safe in person.

Peta Sweet

Peta Sweet - Mentor

I work with purpose led individuals and organisations to help them succeed in how they communicate and engage with their world. I believe we all have the power to communicate authentically and for good. My work as a consultant, coach and facilitator supports people and organisations in finding and understanding their values and purpose and gives me real joy.

Susie Peters

Susie Peters - Business Development Officer

Susie is an experienced wellbeing coach and trainer and has worked with Illuminate since 2018. Most recently, she has managed the Wellbeing Presenters Project, training and coaching beneficiaries to become speakers. Susie is currently using her experience, knowledge and skills in business development to support Illuminate in growing its work with the business community.

Vikki Pratley Coach

Vikki Pratley - Associate Coach and Trainer

After many years as a practicing employment lawyer and a founding partner of a successful law firm, Vikki suffered burnout. This inspired her to change direction and she retrained as a certified ILM coach, a licensed practitioner of Liberating Leadership and Pioneering Professional as well as an NLP Practitioner, and founded her business Skylark.

Jeremy Gulvin Coach

Jeremy Gulvin - Associate Trainer Mental Health First Aid

Jeremy is a qualified coach (University of Cambridge Dip.) and holds a certificate in Psychometrics BPS (University of Cambridge). He is also a qualified Mental Health First Aid Instructor and freelance trainer. His background is business development, leadership and people. He founded Synergy Coaching Consultancy in 2016.

Eleanor Morrison

Eleanor Morrison - Associate Coach

After working in marketing for 15 years, Eleanor retrained as an ICF Coach and founded Big Mind Coaching Ltd., which she runs alongside her role as a youth mentor, supporting 11 to 16 year olds in school. She has four children and enjoys running and yoga.

Philippa Sjoberg

Philippa Sjoberg - Associate Trainer

Philippa has been a supporter of Illuminate since she attended Confidence for Change. She delivers talks on Personal Emotion Remedy Kit (PERK) on our courses and now as an online workshop. Philippa runs her own dog training not-for-profit providing assistance to all regardless of their income.

Szara Coote

Szara Coote

Talk – Speak out and Speak up!

Szara is a survivor, facilitator, mentor and advocate within domestic abuse and mental health.  She supports survivors to learn, develop and ‘Shoosh no more!’ helping them to transform from within. Her work also includes delivering ‘The Freedom Programme’ and she is an East of England Citizen Senate where patients’ voices help lead for change.’

Tom Goode

Tom Goode

Talk: ‘Resilience: simple tools for every stage of life.’

Tom is a sociology and psychology graduate whose previous experience includes working with children in care, with ex-offenders and also running a Cambridge pub for 18 years. Since 2006, he has worked as a personal trainer, a yoga teacher and a neurolinguistic-programming (NLP) therapist and has volunteered with Illuminate for three years.

Talk: ‘Breaking out: a story of building a life after domestic abuse.’

Allysa is a mother of two who experienced many years of domestic abuse which severely impacted her self-esteem and mental health. She sought support and for the past eight years has worked to rebuild her life. Through her talk, she wants to share her experience to help others and to give a fresh perspective for anyone who is struggling with a challenging situation and its after-effects.

Yvette Chivers

Yvette Chivers

Talk: 'Hidden Disabilities in the Workplace'

Yvette is a not-for-profit business owner and is also a DJ, music producer, an advocate for women in the music industry and disability accessibility and equality. Yvette is registered severely sight impaired, having been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 24. She recently founded the project Eye Inspire. Her favourite mantras are: “Carpe Diem” and “Nothing is Impossible”.

Richard Stephens

Richard Stephens 

Talk: 'Successfully Addressing Mental Health Issues'

Richard specialises in mental health awareness training for businesses. His background is in bioscience and he joined Illuminate after working as a mentor to students at the University of Cambridge. Richard is a Human Biology graduate (1988) and holds a Ph.D. in Child Health (1997).

 

Trustees

 

Pam Scott

Pam Scott - Chair

Pam is retired and has worked in social housing, charities and NHS throughout her career. She is based in Cambridge and is actively involved in fundraising to help Illuminate. In her spare time she helps out with the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Alan Soer - Trustee

Alan is the centre manager at Arbury Community Centre in Cambridge. He was worked with community organisations since 1989. Prior to this, he was in the Army. He has a track record of fundraising and trustee experience.

John Clark

John Clark - Trustee

John's background is the Royal Navy and recruitment when he retired he worked with young people in the areas of advice, guidance, homelessness and independent living. John currently runs his own business as a coach, NLP practitioner and clinical hypnotherapist.

Katrina Copping

Christine Montgomery - Trustee

Christine was a registered mental health nurse for twenty years, she went onto complete a degree in Social Work and worked with children and families experiencing complex issues. Christine is also a practice educator and taught on health and social care programs.

 

Keith Bullock

Keith Bullock - Trustee

Keith is a civil servant who lives in Cambridge and works in Whitehall, he advises on telecommunications policy in the Department of Digital Culture, Media and Sport. He has been involved as a business mentor for Illuminate originally through the Cranfield Trust, since 2018.
